Get Some Rest

Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” – Augustine of Hippo
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. – Matthew 11:28

I don't think it is a stretch to suggest that many of us are weary because of all of the stuff that is going on around us. We weren't that great at getting the rest that we need prior to COVID -19 and the election cycle. It seems even harder to get that rest now. Many of us are stressed, worried, aren't sleeping well, and it is all so exhausting. Thankfully, Jesus has something to say to those of us who are weary and burdened. He doesn't promise that he will take away what has us stressed or anxious. He simply says he will give us rest. It is possible in the midst of the swirling chaos that surrounds us that we can find the rest many of us are desperate to find. Our rest begins and ends by going to Jesus. He is the author and provider of our rest.

Are you weary and burdened? I know I have some burdens I am carrying around with me this morning. Is your heart restless? I also know that restless feeling all too well. If weary, tired, and restless are your reality today, then follow Jesus’ prescription as The Great Physician. He calls to you and to me this very moment. Get the rest your heart so desperately needs in the shelter of His presence as he bids you come to him.

Prayer: Jesus, I come to you with a heart heavy, with burdens, and a tired soul. I recognize that I need to find rest in you. Bring rest, peace, and hope to me. Unburden my heart and help me to feel the healing balm of your presence and the rest that can only be found in your shelter. Amen.
