Serving God With your Hobbies
There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine! – Abraham Kuyper
Jesus talks a lot about following after Him in the Gospels. He makes it pretty clear that when we follow Him, He wants Lordship over every area of our lives. We usually take this to mean that we should worship regularly, give regularly, be hospitable, serve in some capacity, and generally be a good person. All of those things are part of what it means to be a disciple, but we don’t always talk a lot about how we spend our leisure time. We tend to think of that time as being something just for us. It’s our time to relax and recharge. However, Jesus wants all of our lives, even the time we spend on our hobbies.
How do we dedicate our hobby time to Jesus? Here are some suggestions for using our leisure activities for God’s glory.
Investing In Others: Hobbies are a great opportunity to invest in others. When you spend time with family, friends, or strangers over shared interests amazing relationships can be built. Shared interests can go a long way toward building relationships that will ultimately lead to opportunities to talk about our faith. Any number of hobbies can give us opportunities to invest in the lives of other people. Our hobbies can be a means by which we answer the call to make disciples by helping us build relationships with others and sharing our faith.
Sabbath: God invites us to Sabbath. Hobbies give us an opportunity to rest and relax. When we step out of our busy lives into restful activities, God is glorified. Sabbath rest reminds us that we are not in control, God is. It reminds us that we are human and that God can run the universe without us. It reminds us we are not defined by what we produce. Hobbies can help us in living out the call toward Sabbath and can be a means by which we glorify God.
The Common Good: There are a number of hobbies that help communities. For instance, people that love to garden in their free time can bless a community by giving a portion of or the whole of what they grow to neighbors or community members in need. An individual's love of sports can translate into coaching or being a mentor to young people who are at risk. If you enjoy running races, you can use that to help raise money for a cause that is important to you. Our hobbies can give us the opportunity to do some good for our community and in so doing promote the common good. Promoting the common good in a community is an important way to glorify and honor God.
Personal Development: Hobbies can help us learn confidence, help us to stay fit, keep our minds sharp, and help us to learn new skills. This can transfer into other areas of our lives. Higher levels of confidence can help us to do our work better, relate more confidently in social settings, and to help us be bolder in sharing our faith. The discipline that we learn in our hobbies can help us develop discipline in other areas of our lives as well. We are to become more like Jesus and Hobbies are a tool to become more Christlike.
